AI and Visual Computing Scientist

Do you want to be a part of an R&D team to advance spatial and functional intelligence in the physical world? Augmenta is seeking passionate, kind, and collaborative talent to help us build 3D foundation models for construction and develop AI-enabled and user-friendly tools to assist architects, engineers, and designers in solving complex problems in the build environment.

Location: Fully Remote, Vacant Position

About Augmenta

At Augmenta, we create software for the construction industry that automates building design and helps transform how architects, engineers, contractors, and developers work.

Augmenta is a Toronto-based foundational technology firm, founded by the team that invented Generative Design at Autodesk. We are a  team of scientists, engineers, designers, application engineers, product specialists, and quality professionals across Canada, US, and Europe. We are building advanced software for the construction industry and bringing the Augmenta Construction Platform to market. At Augmenta, we conceptualize and develop our own models and products.

We have expertise in domains such as visual computing, computational geometry, aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, artificial intelligence and deep learning, product design, and design research.

Generative AI 101

Generative AI represents a new paradigm of human-computer partnership. Users describe the problem they want to solve - inputting goals, preferences, and requirements. Using artificial intelligence and computational techniques, our model generates plausible and diverse solutions that meet those requirements while far outperforming what anyone could design themselves. These models augment human beings - making them smarter, bolder, and more creative.

Visual Computing

Visual computing encompasses all computational disciplines that operate on visual data, including images, videos, and 3D models. They include computer graphics, computer vision, VR/AR, visualization, and human-computer interaction. Modern-day visual computing is intertwined with AI and machine learning. With rapid advances in large language models (LLMs), visual computing also covers the development and finetuning of visual-language (VLMs), visual-language-action (VLA), and multi-modal language models (MLLMs).

What you will do

  • Conduct frontier R&D in spatial AI in the physical world, where the focus is not on building something that looks right, but something that functions as intended.
  • Work side by side with passionate and bright AI and visual computing scientists, as well as engineers and software developers, while being exposed to cutting edge research.
  • See the models that you build or the data that you model synthesizes used in the real world to truly transform the way 3D environments are designed and built.
  • You will be reporting to the VP of AI working closely with the dedicated AI team.  We are seeking scientists at either the junior (MSc or PhD) or senior (PhD, postdoc, or those with relevant working experience) level. The expected salary range for junior positions is $120K - $165K CAD, and for senior scientists is $180K - $250K CAD.  Augmenta does not use AI nor other software tools to assist in its search process.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or MSc with research-based thesis in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or related disciplines, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Academic or R&D experiences in two or more of the following: machine learning, computer vision, computer graphics, robotics, and large foundation models.
  • Having built a machine learning model, on your own or as a lead, to solve a visual computing task in 3D, such as 3D segmentation, reconstruction, or generative AI.
  • Experience working within an R&D team, either in academia or the industry.
  • Ability to quickly prototype ideas / solutions, perform critical analysis, and use creative approaches for solving complex problems.
  • Comfortable working from first principles. You can define a problem, design experiments to test it, and build the minimal system that proves what is possible.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Having published as a lead or co-lead author in top visual computing and machine learning venues including SIGGRAPH, CVPR/ICCV/ECCV, NeurIPS, ICLR, 3DV, etc.
  • Having interned at leading tech firms on relevant projects in AI and visual computing.
  • Experiences in developing agentic workflows that operate on 3D spatial data.
